About the Founder
Gisela Becker was born in Germany and came to the U.S.A. in 1953. She was married to Paul M. Becker, MD, a staff physician at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan, from 1958 until his death in 1990. In 1995 Gisela met a young orphan boy from Ghana on a bus in Turkey. She helped his sisters, brother, and grandmother. In 1997 she traveled to Ghana to see them. At that time she observed firsthand the sufferings of the people, especially the children, in that country. When she returned to the U.S.A. Mrs. Becker's aim was to improve the conditions for the people in Ghana. With that goal in mind she started several projects, but she realized that she could not do it alone. Thus SPANCO was founded, giving interested people an opportunity to help. She is convinced that God's blessings will be with all who are willing to help her with this work.
